Adult with disabilities and limited mobility chooses mobility scooter for everyday usage. It provides them a mean for transportation and allow them to stay independent. However, we cannot drive mobility scooter everywhere. There are certain set of rules that prohibit them to use in certain place. Here is a list of places where you can drive your mobility scooters in UK.

Places We can Drive Our Mobility Scooters 

Driving mobility scooter on the road is allowed by the UK law but there are rules attached to it. Class 3 mobility scooters are allowed to drive on the road. However, they need to have some specific features in order to drive on the road and not get stopped by the police.

Every class 3 mobility scooter should have maximum unladen weight of 150kg but it is allowed to reach at 200kg with all the necessary medical equipment attached to it. Speed limit for mobility scooters range between 4Mph to 8Mph. Mobility scooter can have maximum width of 0.85 metres. Other features are like audible horn, front and real lights and reflectors, direction indicator, good brakes and amber flashing light while driving on dual carriageway.
 

Mobility scooters are not allowed to drive on bus lane, cycle lane and motorway. Also, UK government website advices that avoid dual carriageway with speed limit of over 50Mph. The driver of the mobility scooter needs to follow every highway code while driving on the road. Class 2 scooters are not allowed to drive on the road.

Pavements and Parking  

Mobility scooter in class 2 and class 3 categories are allowed to use pavement to drive. They cannot drive on the cycle lane where paths are marked “cycle only”. Parking restrictions can apply to mobility scooter. Make sure not to leave your mobility scooter on the footpath and pedestrian area where it might obstruct the way.

Some buses are equipped with certain features that allowed mobility scooter to ride in buses. However, every driver of mobility scooter needs to pass certain training for boarding and existing buses. They can take this training with Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT). Also, the mobility scooter need have certain width and length in order to fit inside the designated area. London has different set of rules for mobility scooter travel, they require permit and passes for it.

Similarly, to the bus, mobility drivers have to follow certain rules to travel by train. Most trains allow cheap mobility scooters in UK that follows rules, but there more than 21 rail service providers in England, all with different set of rules. Your mobility scooter measurement should be under 1200mm x 700mm. Also, the total weight of the scooter cannot exceed over 300Kg including driver. 

It’s advisable to call ahead before driving down to the station. Make sure to call them 24-hour earlier before booking tickets. Most train services allowed folding mobility scooter which you need to dismantle before boarding the train.
